Car rental at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
A rental car can be useful for journeys beyond central Shanghai, but driving and vehicle-hire requirements in mainland China differ from those in many other countries. Do not assume that an overseas driving licence or an international driving permit alone is sufficient.
Before booking
- Confirm that the rental company accepts your nationality, travel documents and driving credentials.
- Ask whether a temporary Chinese driving permit or another local procedure is required for your circumstances.
- Check the pickup location, terminal, counter hours and after-hours arrangements in writing.
- Compare the total price, deposit, insurance excess, mileage, fuel policy and additional-driver charges.
- Confirm the vehicle return location and any one-way or after-hours fees.
Driving in Shanghai
Review local traffic regulations, road restrictions, tolls and parking arrangements before driving. Some roads and vehicle categories may be subject to local restrictions. Follow current signs and official instructions.
Alternatives to renting
